Pip and Pop

We miss(ed) you magic land!

It may have been in Brisbane, but I still can't believe I actually missed this!!  From November 2011 until March this year, the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA), Children's Art Centre was home to the most extraordinary, breathtaking exhibit, titled We miss you magic land!.  Perth artists Pip & Pop (aka Nicole Andrijevic and Tanya Schultz) were commissioned to create a magical land for the gallery's 5th birthday celebrations.

The artists drew inspiration from a wide range of sources such as children’s stories, creation myths, Buddhist cosmologies, video games and folktales.  The installation was crafted using cake-decorating tools from materials such as sugar, glitter, modelling clay, LED lights and mirrors.  The end result I am sure you will agree was a captivating, enchanting world that wowed visitors and ignited their imaginations.

Not to despair however, Pip & Pop continue to produce works both in Australia and further abroad.  Soon to be revealed is the Spicy Aesthetics exhibition in Tokyo, Japan (I cannot wait to see some photos).  Also recently released is the book I love that you love what I love by Pip and Pop.

In addition, We miss you magic land! was accompanied by an on-line interactive world that remains available on the Queensland GOMA website: http://interactive.qag.qld.gov.au/pippop/. This is a great, rainy day activity for kids.  My daughters spent some time this afternoon, totally forgetting their winter ills, immersed in their own magic land.

There is of course always hope that Pip & Pop may someday come to NZ.  Who can blame me for being in a happy, optimistic place when looking at these photos?!

This image is actually from an earlier work in Germany.  I just love the intricate design and colour so I had to include it!
