There is no set time that you should get rid of your child’s cot and put them into a bed, although most children make the move sometime between ages 18 months and two and a half. If you are thinking about moving your child to a 'big bed', here are some things that may help you decide when the right time is to move your child to a bed.
Many parents switch their child to a bed when they feel they have outgrown their cot and /or they start to climb over the rails! This sometimes coincides with the arrival of another baby and is another common reason to make the move. If you're having another baby, make the switch at least six to eight weeks before you're due. You want your older child well used to the new bed before they see the baby taking over the cot.
Another reason to make the move to a” big bed” is if you're toilet training your child, you may want your child to sleep in a bed because they will need to easily get to the toilet when necessary.
Some children will adjust easily to the change, while others will not. The change to sleeping in a bed may be just one of many changes in their lives eg; starting nursery/potty training/new baby.
Here are some tips to ease the transition
- Put the bed in the same place as the cot ( if you can!).
- Your child may find it soothing to continue to sleep with their old cot blanket.
- Ask your child to accompany you to the shop to pick out the new bed/bedding.
- Perhaps throw a “big bed” party - invite friends and grandparents. Your child may be so excited about getting a ‘big bed” that everything will go smoothly.
One important point to note is that you should always use a guard/rail to prevent children from rolling over and falling out of the new bed. There are different types of guards/rails available, so be sure to shop around and find one that suits your needs and fits the bed.
