White clouds are perfect for photography on location

Young Kiwi families spend most of their time together playing outdoors – so for Luke White from White Cloud Photography, that’s the perfect place to photograph them.

Shooting parents and children in a relaxed, natural atmosphere in a place that means something to them gives a family photo session a stylish edge that fits perfectly with today’s modern décor tastes, Luke says.

In addition young children are much more likely to co-operate during a shoot if they have the freedom to play. Capturing real smiles of delight or laughter always results in a better finished product, too.

babybites set Luke the ultimate challenge: photographing a young family with two busy, busy toddlers – one 15 month old and one two year old. Even though Luke hadn’t been to the location the family chose before, he scouted around prior to the shoot and worked out how to get the best backdrops quickly in succession, so that the whole shoot was over within an hour and a half (and before midget meltdowns started!).

Despite the cloudy conditions and rain threatening on the day we shot, the shots were dramatically composed and coloured, with Luke adding some sepia and colour brightening to some of the shots to make the children stand out.

The most important part of a family shoot is making everyone comfortable, Luke says. A former sportswear photographer in the UK, Luke turned his hand to location photography for families when he realised he was good at putting his friends’ children at ease during candid moments.

“Walking around and keeping the kids on the move makes the most of the natural locations, but it also helps keep their minds busy so we get great relaxed shots,” Luke says.

babybites is offering a free family photoshoot with White Cloud Photography worth $520 NZD in its 2nd birthday prize draw. Click here to find out more!
