Lucas's Hot Air Balloon Party

Up up and away!

7 October 2010

I have to admit, I was more than a little stuck on ideas for my little boys 1st birthday. Even at the invite stage, nothing quite seemed right. And then I found a hot air balloon silhouette I liked and figured that I may as well just go for it.

The details:
  • the invitations I designed myself, printed on photo paper and stuck a small piece of magnet to the back
  • the cake was a simple supermarket made sponge cake, and I used plain old ready to roll white icing and coloured it with gel food paste (the cloud shapes were cut out using a cookie cutter from Dog’s Breakfast)
  • there were actually heaps of balloons that I haven’t pictured, but got from Party Masters in Wellington (they had a great range of the small decorators balloons as well as some really big balloons, which were perfect for the cake)
  • food wise we did the usual chips, dips, cheese, crackers, sandwiches etc, along with blue jellies, little lolly ‘shots’, chocolate mousse ‘shots’, chocolate dipped marshmallows on sticks (idea borrowed from Alannah Rose), chocolate crackles, biscuits (homemade even!), and cupcakes (gluten free so I had something to eat!). We also had the usual cheerios and savories which were handed around, along with big bowls of popcorn (covered in icing sugar, yum). I kept the food relatively simple as it was all just done the day before and I didn’t want to be up until all hours!
  • the ‘party bags’ were little plastic containers (from Moore Wilson) filled with lollies, popped into a Robert Gordon baking cup, and then tied together with curling ribbon and a little home designed tag
  • the facepainter was Christy from Daizy Design.  She was AMAZING.
