A rant and a rave

Scales!

29 June 2010

I’m going off track for a day. Off on a tangent, a rant and a rave. I’ll come back to being focused tomorrow.

You see, my scales died. I assumed it was just the batteries, so yesterday went and got some. Popped the new ones in, and what do you know? Dead as a doornail still.

Being the good girl that I am and wanting to be able to keep track on my progress and measure the impact of my eating habits, I trotted off this morning to our local Briscoes to get some scales. Admittedly, I was expecting a selection of one or two different types… nope, over 20. The first ones I tried where the old fashioned mechanical type and weighed me pretty much where I was expecting to be (a little over technically, but dressed in boots, jeans, a winter woolen coat and carrying my handbag, I couldn’t expect any miracles right?!). Maybe I should have just stopped there, but I decided given they had floor models of all of them, I’d step on them all. The next ones were a shock and a half – over 5kg heavier than the first!

To be honest, I have no idea how scales actually work, but whatever happened to a weight being a weight? As I got on and off different scales, my weight went up and down like a yoyo, all over the place. The fat scales gave me different fat readings each time, the bone densities different each time.

There was one brand that was consistent across all of their models, and gave me the same reading that all of the mechanical scales did. Despite the fact I have owned “fat” scales ever since they first became available, I finally decided that I would go with the mechanical option in the one brand that seemed consistent. It was logical to me.

I don’t think I will ever compare my weight against someone ever again unless they weighed in on the same scales as me… although, to be honest, probably best not to compare at all!

And I know I still haven’t presented you all with my grand plan yet, and I need to. I do have one!! I’ll pretty it up and publish it tomorrow for you. Consider the pump class I am going to tonight punishment enough for now!
