Bloke's Beans for Father's Day

Rock on! It's Father's Day and what better way to celebrate than by serving-up Bloke's Beans for Dads brekkie!  Not only will Dad LOL with the crazy crustache nestling on his beans, but we guarantee you will get plenty of hi fives for making baked beans from scratch!

And if we are making baked beans from scratch, You could make a Father's Day card from scratch too. Try this origami shirt  - it was a real hit with the Dads, when we made it in class!  
 
Ingredients
Dash of olive oil
1 small onion, chopped
½ tsp minced garlic
Salt & black pepper
Water
2x 425g cans cannellini beans, drained
¼ cup maple syrup
½ cup tomato purée
1 tsp mustard powder
 
For the Blokes Face
2 pieces of toast
1 boiled egg, peeled and cut in half
Marmite
 
Method
  1. In saucepan, heat oil over medium heat. Add onion, garlic and season with a pinch of salt and pepper. Cook until onion is soft.
  2. Add drained beans to saucepan with 1/2 cup of the water. Simmer until beans have softened. If beans are not soft after 7 minutes, add 1/4 cup more water and keep cooking.
  3. Add maple syrup, tomato purée, mustard powder and another 1/2 cup of water. Simmer until sauce has thickened, then season with salt and pepper.
  4. Serve in a desert bowl.
To make Bloke's Face
  1. For ‘helmet like’ hair, (see diagram) cut toast in half, pick one half then starting from the bottom edge cut out a rectangle then remove piece.

  1. Spread on the marmite.
  2. For eyes, place eggs half under the helmet hair (yolk side up).
  3. Pop of a dob of marmite on each yolk for pupils.
  4. Have fun fashioning a moustache by cutting out crazy shapes from remaining piece of toast.  Alternatively if you are after a more chiseled moustache you can purchase moustache sandwich cutters (Crustaches), online from www.kiwicakes.co.nz.
