Princess Fairy Tale Maker

Every princess has their own story...

As a three year old my daughter had a very active imagination, with a couple of imaginary friends along for the ride.  I wasn't surprised, apparently I had a couple of imaginary friends myself as a youngster!  A couple of years down the track, she has now ditched the friends for a complete imaginary world.  When playing by herself I often hear her narrating a story as though she were reading a book.  So, when I found the Princess Fairy Tale Maker app by award winning iOS app designers Duck Duck Moose , I knew I was on to a winner.

The child initially chooses from a number of background scenes then adds characters (princesses, ballerinas, fairies, mermaids - a total overload of 'girlyness') and then props (known as stickers) such as flowers, jewels, cakes, balloons etc.  There is also the ability to draw free hand on the page.  The child can then record their own voice whilst moving the characters and stickers around the screen to tell their story, this is when the magic happens!  Replaying the audio and simultaneous on screen movements is sure to be met with squeals of delight by the author.

One of my favourite features of the app is the ability to use your own photo as the scene or backdrop for the story.  This allows your child to literally jump right in to the story.

This app won't be for every child, being comfortable speaking to an electronic device isn't everyone's cup of tea, nor is the extreme 'girlyness' factor.  Fortunately for my younger daughter though, Princess Fairy Tale Maker also includes a set of easy to use colouring pages, including sparkles!

Price $2.59 NZD. Available for both iPhone and iPad.
